There are a good number of luxury hotels, the majority of which are located in Douba, Lautoka, Nadi, Raki Raki, Sigatoka, Suva and Tavua and off Viti Levu at Ovalau and Savusavu. There are also many small inexpensive hotels throughout the islands. Increasing numbers of establishments are offering dormitory accommodation at cheap rates. Small resort islands include Beachcomber Island, Castaway Island, Mana Island, Plantation Island and Treasure Island. A 5 per cent hotel tax is levied on all hotel services charged to guests’ accounts, including meals in hotel restaurants. For information, contact the Fiji Visitors Bureau (see Top Things To Do), which can supply listings of hotels, their cost and facilities; or the Fiji Hotel Association. Grading: A star system is used to indicate the price range, as follows: 3-star (deluxe), 2-star (medium) and 1-star (budget). These are known as Budgetels. They are clean, comfortable and most have a licensed bar, pool and restaurant; some are air conditioned with kitchens. There is also a youth hostel in Suva. Bungalows are available in Viti Levu, Mamancas and Yaswas. Bungalows come with a standard room and bathroom (some have shared bathrooms). Meals are often prepared by your host and served in the main house. This is an ideal form of getting away from mainstream tourism and spending a few days as a guest of a village. Prices range from F$55 per person a night for a standard bungalow to F$220 for a deluxe. Some resorts, such as the Beachcomber, have overwater, beachfront bungalows with a separate living room and air conditioning. Many larger resorts also have a spa where massages and facials are available. Backpacker hostels are available at Viti Levu, Yasawas and Mamancas. Prices vary.
