Food & drink Mains water is normally chlorinated and, whilst relatively safe, may cause mild abdominal upsets. Bottled water is available. Milk is pasteurised and dairy products are safe for consumption. Local meat, poultry, seafood, fruit and vegetables are generally considered safe to eat.
Other risks Hepatitis A occurs. Leptospirosis and toxic fish poisoning occurs. There is a high prevalence of HIV/AIDS and precautions should be undertaken to avoid exposure. Health insurance is recommended, since medical treatment can be expensive. There are 16 public and six private hospitals. Standards vary hugely.
