IDD is available to anywhere in Azerbaijan. Country code: 994. International calls from Azerbaijan may be dialled directly from Baku; calls from other parts of the republic must be made through the operator.
Roaming agreements exist with a few international mobile phone companies. Coverage is mostly limited to the capital and main towns.
Available in large cities and resorts.
There are a number of state-run and public media outlets that compete with private and opposition publications and private broadcasters.
Freedom of speech is guaranteed by the constitution and the media are theoretically free, although there are reported incidents of intimidation and violence against journalists and media outlets critical of the Government. A prominent opposition journalist, Elmar Huseynov, was murdered in 2005. Azerbaijan has made attempts to rectify these allegations by launching a public TV and radio service in 2005, intending to be free from Government control.
Press: Newspapers include Azadliq, Ekho and Zerkalo (in Russian and English). The government daily is Azarbaycan. The English-language newspaper is Baku-Sun.
TV: There is a newly launched state broadcaster with two national networks, Azerbaijan TV, plus Public TV. Private stations include Private ANS TV, Space TV and Lider TV.
Radio: There is a state broadcaster with two national networks, Azerbaijan Radio. There is also a state-run external service, Voice of Azerbaijan. Private-run FM stations include ANS ChM, Radio Lider and Radio Azad Azerbaijan.
International postal services are sometimes disrupted. Delays occur, although letters should normally take 10 to 14 days to arrive. Parcels should be registered or sent by courier services to accelerate the process and ensure against loss.
